Lydia gripped the fence as she looked up and down the empty streets. The sun was setting, turning the whole world a rich orange. If she was gong to do it, this was her chance. She checked up and down the streets one more time to be sure. No matter what, she couldn’t let anyone see her power.
The trouble with super powers is that when you are one of the only ones with them, people want to lock you up and study you. That’s what happened with all the others anyway. Lydia saw it on the news.
That was why no one could know about hers. Not even her parents. They may have been her parents, but how would they react when they found out she was one of the freaks and weirdos they saw on the news? She could understand some people being locked up. A few people had dangerous powers. Most people were harmless though. Hers wouldn’t hurt anyone.
Well, maybe it might hurt her, but that was it. She wasn’t strong enough to drag anyone else into it.
No one was around. The last sound of the cars had faded. The curtains were drawn in the apartments on this side. Everyone should be sitting down to dinner.
She took several steps back to give herself room for a running start.
        Deep breath.
        One last check.
        Go!
Moving as fast she could, she ran at the fence. Her heart pounded. The air whistled in her ears. At the last second she jumped.
She soared over the fence. For a moment, she could see over the homes and buildings. The ocean looked black against the indigo sky. Her heart felt like it stopped. The wind moved to fast to breath. All the city sounds were drowned out by the wind. She was weightless.
It was like jumping off the swings when she was five. Her mom would yell every time. It frightened her mom. But she wasn’t scared. She was flying. For one brief second she was flying.
Her heart and stomach jumped as she dropped down. She would land it this time. She would. She would.
Lydia crashed into the ground. Her legs slipped on the grass and she slammed butt first. The wind was knocked out of her. She lay there, gasping. Mom would be frantic if she knew.
But she didn’t. For now, she didn’t.
As her lungs began to work again, she rolled her head to the side so she could like back up the hill and at the fence. No one was around. None of the curtains had moved in the apartments. She couldn’t risk a second jump. There was never a second jump.
Relaxing, she watched the sky change colors. Tomorrow, she would be back.

Great use of the prompt. I love how you captured that rush of jumping and flying. Very cool.
